Fastest Way To Remove Backgrounds From Photos On Mobile Phone (Photoroom Review)

Hey, 

I recently came across this app on Google Play Store, and it immediately stole my heart with its simplicity and efficiency. This app called Photoroom is a must-have for those who use their mobile phones for graphics design or photo editing. The app uses the internet to quickly and accurately remove backgrounds from your photos automatically. Aside from that it also has some other features and can even be used to add a new background to your image. The app also has some templates that can be used by non-graphic designers who need something fast. However, to access most of the templates you would have to upgrade to premium. Photoroom is only 8mb, so you can easily download it and try it out for yourself.


How To Remove Backgrounds in Photoroom

1. Search and install the app from Play store or The App Store.

2. Make sure you are connected to the internet when you launch the app. Hit the plus (+) button and open a photo from your gallery.

3. The app will automatically remove the background from the image for you, and launch the image editor.

4. To save the image without a background you have to delete the background layer by tapping it and then selecting “erase”. (Make sure it is set to save file as .png in the app settings).

5. You can either decide to continue editing the image or you save/ share it by hitting the “upload” icon in the top right corner.


Replacing Backgrounds in Photoroom

    When the background has been automatically removed in Photoroom you can proceed to replace it with a new background.

1. Tap the background layer and choose “Replace”.

2. The “COLLECTIONS” tab will open, and you will see a collection of default backgrounds in different categories which you can download and apply to your image.

3. Another option is to choose an image you already have on your device, and you can do this by tapping “MY PHOTOS” tab.

4. The most recent pictures on your device will show up but if you want to select older photos from your gallery then simply tap the “Gallery” icon and find the picture you want.

5. You can also take a photo with your phone camera by tapping the “Camera” icon.

6. Once the background image is selected you can close the dialogue box by sliding it down.


Further Editing With Other Tools

    Once your background has been removed and the photo is saved as a PNG without a background, you can transfer the file to your computer to use on advanced photo editing softwares such as Photoshop and GIMP. You can of course edit it with mobile apps such as Pixellab and Picsart as well. These tools can be helpful if you want to create a more advanced manipulation which might not be available in Photoroom currently, but trust me this app has a lot to offer.

If you are not quite satisfied with the work done by the AI then you can proceed to edit the "Person" layer by choosing cutout and using the "Manual" option. 



Pros


Accuracy: the AI used by Photoroom is really good and does a nearly perfect job of removing backgrounds.

Speed: it saves time and can delete backgrounds in literally seconds.

High Quality: unlike some background removing tools out there Photoroom gives you a high quality image even without a premium plan.


Cons

Watermark: the Photoroom watermark will always be placed over your photo until you upgrade to the premium package.

Text Editor: don’t get me wrong this app has a text editor but it isn’t too great as it lacks some simple options that would have made life a lot easier while working on typography. I noticed adjusting the font size is not very convenient since you have to use the pinch gesture which might not be accurate and can easily cause you to rotate the text mistakenly.
